In 1932, 78 years ago, Father Pyrounakis dared to operate the first Camp for working youth in Perama, which was then covered with pine trees. These children, from the age of 13, worked in the factories of Piraeus under harsh conditions and inhumane treatment from their employers. For these children, he established the first camp in the area of Perama, which at that time was a forested region and difficult to access.
With the passage of time and after a great struggle, the Camp became well-equipped and had a very good living program. Unfortunately, the Metaxas dictatorship dissolved Mr. Pyrounakis’s organization at the end of 1939, and the Camp grounds were taken over by Metaxas’s Youth organization.
During its 8 years of operation, the Camp, with the help of 120 staff members and its well-planned programs, met the needs of 3,470 working youths, while also contributing to raising society’s awareness of their problems and encouraging concern for them.
