1989-Today

From 1989 until today, on a continuous evolutionary path:

  • The number of children hosted each year at the Camp has increased from 70 to 140, and more than 1,900 children have been hosted, most of them for more than 3 years.
  • More than 350 Greek volunteers, students and trainees, most of them for over 5 years, have participated voluntarily in our activities, along with 195 foreign volunteers.
  • Collaborations have expanded, and besides Filiki Folia, there are partnerships with 10 other agencies and organizations serving children, as well as with SCI and CiA, which support foreign volunteers.
  • The programs (crafts, entertainment, group time, sports) are constantly being updated and becoming more specialized, and new activity ideas are implemented with 15 active clubs of free choice for the children.
  • Large amounts of money—significant for the financial capabilities of the Association—have been raised and spent to increase capacity and modernize the facilities (new kitchen building, new tents, new dining halls, renovation of the theater, new sports fields, playground, equipment, etc.).
  • Other activities have been organized for children facing difficulties who do not live in the greater Elefsina area (Central Athens, Patissia, Kypseli, earthquake-affected areas of Fyli and Zephyri, refugees from Lavrio, children from islands such as Milos and Amorgos, etc.).
  • New ideas have been implemented, carried out by young people throughout the year and not just during the summer (the magazine THROISMA, a website, a theater group, theatrical games, screenings, etc.).

During these years (from 1989 until today), 1,900 children have been hosted free of charge at the Camp with the help of approximately 500 volunteers.

The “Happy Children – Happy Youth” Camps dream, in a world that is becoming increasingly impersonal and harsher for the economically disadvantaged and their children, of hosting more children in more modern facilities with better programs. These goals will become achievable thanks to the voluntary efforts and knowledge of many people who, with enthusiasm, imagination, and love, will create small human communities for children and youth. Spaces that will provide opportunities for the expression of skills and emotions of those who will collaborate during the winters and live harmoniously together in the summers at the Camp.
