For the past 80 years, on Mount Pateras in Mandra, Attica, more than 80 volunteers gather each year, guided by their love for children, to create a small global village—the “Happy Children-Happy Youth” summer camp. The people who participate in this project hold, among other things, the following core values: the belief in the many talents of every individual, respect for democratic institutions, equality, freedom of speech and thought, and the absence of discrimination.
Every July, the camp welcomes 140 children (boys and girls) aged 6-13 from disadvantaged backgrounds (children from difficult family and economic situations, refugee and immigrant children, children from institutions and shelters) free of charge, regardless of origin, nationality, religion, or gender. In our small multicultural community, volunteers work with great passion, love, and energy to not only meet the children’s needs for food and free time in nature, but also to organize and implement programs and engaging activities (theater, music, shadow puppetry, puppetry, photography, painting, dance, gardening, handicrafts and constructions, experiments) with the aim of providing psychological and social support.
The organization does not employ any paid staff, and all activities and supporting tasks are carried out by volunteers who dedicate their time, experience, and knowledge. During the camp season, group leaders, community leaders, technical staff, and kitchen personnel work together daily with the main focus being the proper hospitality and happiness of the children.
